[For the background to this, please refer to the recent website newsletter. Following is the latest update from the lead contractor, Balfour Beatty. For as long as these updates are provided, this post will be amended and moved up the posting list.]
Work to improve journeys by upgrading the M3 motorway is planned to start later this year. We’ll be installing narrow lanes in both directions between junction 9 at Winchester and junction 14 at Eastleigh, and the hard shoulder will be used as a running lane. This will provide a safe working area in the central reservation, whilst keeping three lanes open during the daytime.
To get the hard shoulder ready for this, preparation work continues under daytime hard shoulder closures, overnight lane closures with some planned carriageway and/or slip road closures. All traffic management for full overnight carriageway and/or slip road closures will usually be rolled out from 9pm and taken off by 6am.
Planned closures for this week are: Continue reading
If you’re going to Southampton, here’s the bad news. From Monday 21st there’ll be ten weeks of works on the Avenue. Hopefully it’ll all be worth it in the end. For details of closures and diversions, go here.
And the good news? Also from Monday 21st, evening and Sunday parking charges are being lifted. For more information, including a list of locations, go here.
There’s light at the end of the tunnel, but still a little more pain to endure. Here’s the latest from Southampton City Council about completion of the works around the Chilworth roundabout. Continue reading
Those who would normally access M27 Junction 5 (or Southampton Parkway / Airport) via Bassett Green Road and Stoneham Way will be pleased to hear that, at long last, the road closure at the junction of those two roads will be removed after December 13th. The A27 through Swaythling Arch will also be reopened.

As reported in this Daily Echo article, we’re now facing up to six months’ of traffic delays between Chilworth and Chandlers Ford caused by the creation of new ‘shared usage’ cycleways, including one down Winchester Road between the Chilworth and ASDA roundabouts.

Plan ahead for Highways England closure of the M27 this weekend
As Highways England prepares to close a section of the M27 to replace the bridge which carries the A3057 Romsey Road over the motorway, Southampton City Council and Hampshire County Council are urging residents to leave more time for their journeys and expect extra traffic in the area. For the next fourteen weeks or so, access to Chilworth from the Stoneham direction may be problematic. There are major works at the junctions of Stoneham Lane, Stoneham Way and Thomas Lewis Way. Full details are on Southampton City Council’s website, here.
Also… between now (starting with the weekend of 29-30 September) and January 2020 there will be a series of major disruptions caused by the demolition and rebuilding of the bridges that carry the A3057 Romsey Rd over the M27 between J3 & J4. More detailed information can be found on the Highways England website here.
Chilworth residents may be interested to know about some motorway closures that will take place soon to facilitate resurfacing and ‘smartening’ of the M27. As you’ll see from the letter here, diversions will push traffic onto the A27 through Chilworth. The poor standard of English grammar employed leaves the message open to interpretation. The first two closures are clearly overnight lane closures only. It’s not entirely clear that the subsequent four week complete closure eastbound and four week complete closure westbound are also overnight only. We must hope so, or else February and March would be good months to be away on a cruise!
