Residents who have registered with the Hampshire Superfast Broadband project have just received an informative update. Read on to see full details, and to find out how to register your own interest in faster broadband. It would be interesting to hear what individual homes are experiencing – please let everyone know by leaving a comment saying what road you live in and what speed you’re currently getting. According to the map at the project website, a large part of Chilworth (Heatherlands/Pinelands/Hadrian Way) is being provided for commercially by BT or Virgin Media. The rest is part of “Hampshire Wave 1: to end 2015”.
Here is the text of the e-mailed update:
“The number of premises reached by the national Superfast Broadband programme has hit two million. Hampshire’s Superfast Broadband Programme has recently achieved its target of reaching over 54,000 premises by the end of the 2014-2015 financial year, enabling people to ‘switch on’ to broadband speeds of between 24 and 76Mbps. Inclusive of Government funding, Hampshire County Council and its partners are investing more than £26 million which will provide Superfast Broadband access to at least 95% of homes and businesses in Hampshire by 2018.
In the last month a total of 51 cabinets across the county have been enabled with Superfast Broadband, offering Superfast speeds of a minimum of 24Mbps to those living within the cabinets’ 1200m radius.
These new Superfast cabinets are located throughout the county, demonstrating the extensive reach of the programme and the commitment to provide as many premises as possible with Superfast Broadband.
Newly enabled cabinets are located in: Aldershot, Alresford, Andover, Bentley, Bishops Waltham, Bransgore, Fareham, Farnborough, Hamble, Hartley Wintney, Herriard, Kingsclere, Liphook, Locks Heath, Medstead, Milford on Sea, Overton, Rowlands Castle, Rownhams, Sway, Titchfield, Totton, Wallop, Weyhill, Wickham and Winchester.
These latest additions cabinets bring the total number of cabinets enabled with Superfast Broadband to 242 in Hampshire.
We are continuing to work hard with the Government to find solutions that will allow us to reach the final 4% of the county, those that are located in areas that are the most difficult and expensive to reach.
The Government has set out plans to offer improved services to all of those currently experiencing under 2 Mbps of broadband. BT is working on this solution at the moment and we will be able to offer this by the end of 2015.
BT and Hampshire County Council are currently planning Wave 2 of the project and will be able to release more detailed information regarding timescales for delivery later this year – probably after September.
