Small Business Saturday

small-business-saturdayThose in Chilworth with business interests may be interested in this event on Saturday, 7th December in Southampton Central Library.  It is to support a national initiative and to celebrate small businesses in the city and their innovative ideas.  Also to encourage people who may be thinking about starting up a business to come and see what others are doing.

Small Business Saturday is a grass-roots campaign that encourages people to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities, both on the Saturday and beyond. It is traditionally an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The initiative started in 2010, and has generated a lot of custom and interest for small businesses and now it is being brought to the UK. Small businesses provide almost two thirds of private sector employment and almost half of private sector turnover.

Chuka Umunna (Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation & Skills) is the instigator – for an introduction to Chuka’s thoughts read this article.

There are some interesting speakers and presentations on the day:

James Hardiman – “Over recent centuries we have witnessed a number of technological revolutions: the printing press, mass production, the Internet, smart phones: none had as much effect as the imminent production revolution with 3D printing. When the wave hits, will it be surf or drown? “

Alison John – “Without the hassle of negotiating rents, rates and jumping through legal hoops, businesses large and small can utilise pop up shops and can sublet a Space Qube location and bring their products and services to life on the high street” –

Chris Buckingham -“Crowdfunding offers an alternative solution for raising finance for your opportunity in a very social way but it needs to be carefully thought through. As more people try to get their ideas funded this way so the more challenging it becomes to get noticed and succeed. Chris Buckingham, founder of Minivation, empowers small businesses to use this interesting method of raising finance through their research.”

There will also be two speed-networking sessions, plus representation from Hampshire Chamber, Solent LEP, WSX Enterprise, Enterprise First  and the FSB
