Tuesday 3rd May Southampton – Royal Aeronautical Society (RAES) Solent Lecture

AGM and Lecture – the genesis of the turbojet by Capt. Ian Whittle. Ian talks about his father, Air Commodore Sir Frank Whittle’s, invention of the turbojet engine. After a career in the RAF, BOAC and Kuwait Airways Ian has logged over 22,000 hours and is back to flying propeller-driven General Aviation aeroplanes on a Private Pilot Licence.  Solent Sky Museum. Wednesday 11th May Winchester – Science Centre & Planetarium Lecture Series

The Planet Hunters: interferometry, the transit method and the search for extraterrestrial life. Evening lectures on the second Wednesday’s of the Month at 4.30pm and 6.30pm, each follow by a short Planetarium Show about the month’s sky.

Monday 16th May Southampton

KLM is inaugurating a new route with flights from Southampton to Amsterdam. It will be operated with a Fokker 70 aircraft.

Monday 16th May Eastleigh – Bishop’s Waltham Aviation Group Lecture

‘A Day in the Life of an Airline Pilot’ by Kim Sharman. This promises to be another excellent evening following Kim’s interesting and entertaining earlier presentations on life as a Cold War RN pilot and on the impact of the Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet. A second career as a 747 Captain with Cathay Pacific and current lecturing on the cruise ship circuit provides background for a fascinating review of an airline pilot’s day interspersed with many anecdotes in Kim’s individual and professional style. Thursday 19th May Fareham – Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) Solent Network Event & Dinner

Unmanned Aerial Systems: where next? Gary Clayton BSc MIET – Chairman of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Systems Association (UAVS).Gary has been on the Council of UAVS since 2004 and was elected Chairman in 2008.  In that time Gary has guided the UK Industry through times of previously unparalleled expansion and change.  He was part of the original JAA/EUROCONTROL UAS Taskforce in 2004 and has been a respected representative to National and International Governments and Regulators ever since.  His paper ‘Integration of UAS in Civilian Aviation – The State of Play’ was published in the IET Engineering and Technology Reference series in 2015.
