Tuesday 1st March Salisbury – Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) Dorset & South Wilts Network Lecture

Cosmonauts: Birth of the Space Age – A Talk by Doug Millard, Deputy Keeper at the Science Museum, London. Cosmonauts: Birth of the Space Age, a unique exhibition on the Russian Space Programme includes, Gagarin’s spacecraft, Vostok 6 used by Valentina Tereshkova; Voskhod 1 first multiple crew into orbit; L3, lunar lander, and many Russian space artefacts. 18.00  Arrive and Refreshments, 18.30 Talk followed by questions. Saturday 5th March Solent – Spitfire 80th birthday flight

Spitfire inspires next generation of British aviators on its 80th Birthday. March 5th 2016 marks the 80th anniversary of the first flight of the Spitfire. Southampton Airport, where the prototype first took to the skies in 1936, will host an event that both celebrates the iconic aircraft’s past whilst looking to its future. A Spitfire will be taking to the skies from the airport to mark the occasion and will fly over the south coast for local people and visitors to see. The Spitfire performing the 80th birthday flight should be visible around the Solent between 11:00 – 12:00 on Saturday 5th March, subject to weather conditions. Some good vantage points will be along the River Itchen, Weston Shore, Hythe, Royal Victoria Country Park, Lee on Solent and Cowes. Wednesday 9th March Winchester – Science Centre & Planetarium Lecture Series

Destruction of supersonic solid state snowballs in the ultra-hot near-vacuum coronal plasma Prof John Brown (University of Glasgow). Thursday 10th March Salisbury – Museum of Army Aviation Event

Third of 3 Paul Beaver Lecture Series. Paul Beaver Best-selling Spitfire author, Paul Beaver reveals some newly discovered information about the design, first flight and development of the world’s most iconic aeroplane. The illustrated talk will also have unique posters, memorabilia on sale and Paul will be joined by a special veteran guest. 6:45 pm – 9:30 pm. £10.00 entrance fee. Wednesday 16th March Southampton – Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) Solent Network Visit

Technical Visit to CooperVision. The visit will follow an introductory talk about CooperVision and the process involved in making different contact lenses. The visit itself will look at the automation and machine vision systems, as well as the contact lens construction and moulding process, all the way through to the packaging of the lenses. 16:30-18:30. Due to security restrictions only pre-registered visitors will be admitted to the site.  Visitors will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement before the visit commences. Satellite – an untapped alternative for rural 4G LTE backhaul. The growth of 4G LTE voice and data services is causing mobile operators around the globe to evaluate different backhaul technologies. Thursday 17th March Weybridge – Brooklands Trust Members Talk

Girl on a Motorcycle by Zoe Cano. If you came to Wings & Wheels in August you may have met Zoe Cano and her motorcycle on the BTM stand. She follows up that appearance with this talk. It was a question of Bonneville or Bust! She had nothing – no money, no bike, no time, no experience. She pitched up in Boston and commenced an 8000km trip across America solo on a classic Triumph Bonneville. This evening she will talk about her experiences and will also be selling copies of her book afterwards. Members £2  non-members £5. Monday 21st March Eastleigh – Bishop’s Waltham Aviation Group Lecture

‘The Nimrod MRA4’ by Andy Collins Andrew was a member of the Flight Operations Team at British Aerospace on the Nimrod project until his retirement in 2005 and is well qualified to review the development and ultimate fate of the aircraft in the Strategic Defence and Security Review of 2010. A description of the MRA4’s impressive capabilities, the reasons for its extended gestation period and final cancellation is particularly appropriate in view of the recent decision to order the Boeing P8 as replacement in the vital role of maritime defence. Sunday 27th March Southampton – Flybe new route between Southampton and Paris Charles de Gaulle

Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline is introducing a new daily flight between Southampton and Paris Charles De Gaulle airport as part of its 2016 Summer schedule. This new route is in addition to Flybe’s established twice daily service to Paris Orly airport, boosting flights to Paris airports to three flights a day.
