Monday 27th June – Sunday 3rd July Salisbury – Chalke Valley History Festival 2016

The largest festival dedicated entirely to History in the UK. This year we have another amazing line-up of wonderful historic war birds for the Festival weekend.  There can be few more stunning places to watch these wonderful aircraft dance around the sky and it is has become an integral part of the festival.  Flying display – among the aircraft attending are: Avro Lancaster (two days), Fairey Swordfish, Auster, Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk, Hawker Hurricane, Supermarine Spitfire XIX, Supermarine Spitfire IX, Vought F4U Corsair and Yakovlev Yak-3.

Saturday 2nd July J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race

The annual J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, organised by the Island Sailing Club, is a one-day yacht race around the Isle of Wight, an island situated off the south coast of England. The race regularly attracts over 1,700 boats and around 16,000 sailors, making it one of the largest yacht races in the world and the fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK after the London Marathon and the Great North and South Runs.

Sunday 3rd July – Brooklands Musuem

The Brooklands Motorcycle Show, Then and Now Join us as we celebrate a staggering legacy of motorcycling at Brooklands matched with the best of today’s bikes and super-machines. Motorcycle enthusiasts, no matter what they ride or from what era, all are welcome to come and enjoy the spectacle. Former motorcycle and truck-racing legend Steve Parrish will be the special guest at this, the main Brooklands Museum motorcycle event of the year. Also visit nearby Mercedes-Benz World free-of-charge.

Wednesday 6th July Romsey – South Hampshire Historical Aviation Society SHHAS Talk

Memories of the Moor – Flight testing for the Cold War by Dennis Morley BTech, CEng, MRAeS Chief Flight Test Engineer, BAE Systems.  He has worked in Flight Test for 38 years and has been directly associated with the development of some 35 military aircraft types beginning with the Buccaneer in 1974, through F4 Phantom, Harrier, Tornado and Hawk to current test programmes such as Typhoon, Taranis, Mantis and F35 Lightning II.  All meetings 7.30 for 7.45pm start. Friday 8th July Lyndhurst – New Forest Aviation Group (NFAG) Lecture

‘Poole and its Flying Boats’ by Mike Phipp.  Mike Phipp is a keen aviation historian and author of many aviation titles; he has worked in and around Bournemouth Airport all his life. Flying boats have been a familiar sight in the Solent since the dawn of aviation. Two of Britain’s major manufactures, Saunders-Roe and Supermarine, were based in Cowes and Woolston respectively. The area has been home to flying boats of Imperial Airways and, latterly, BOAC and Aquila Airways. Doors open at 7pm for prompt 7.30pm start at Lyndhurst Community Centre. Monday 11th – Sunday 17th July Farnborough – Farnborough International Airshow 2016

Taking place just once every 2 years, the Farnborough International Airshow is one of the most iconic events in Hampshire, if not the world. Held at the historical Farnborough Aerodrome in Hampshire – the birthplace of British aviation, the show features a jam-packed flying display both on the ground and in the air, as well as a multitude of entertainment features. Many aerospace/defence companies based in the South West will be in attendance including: Airbus, Babcock, BAE Systems, Chemring, Cobham, Curtiss-Wright, Eaton, GKN, Honeywell, Leonardo, Lockheed-Martin UK, Meggitt, Pall Corp, QinetiQ, Rockwell-Collins, Rolls-Royce, Safran, Serco, Thales & Vector.

Wednesday 13th July Winchester – Science Centre & Planetarium Lecture Series

Asteroids, Comets and Impacts. Should we worry? By Prof Robin Catchpole (University of Cambridge). Evening lectures on the second Wednesday’s of the Month at 4.30pm and 6.30pm, each follow by a short Planetarium Show about the month’s sky.

Saturday 16th July Southampton – Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Event 

Afternoon visit to Bursledon Brickworks.  Set in the only Victorian steam driven brickworks left in the country, the Brickworks at Bursledon allow you to walk in the footsteps of the old brickmakers. There is so much to see and learn as you follow the route the clay would have taken before transforming into a brick. So authentic you can almost hear the men working round you. Free to attend but limited places.

Thursday 21st – Sunday 24th July Portsmouth – The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series

The hottest sailing competition in the world, returns to Portsmouth in July.  The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series is a racing circuit featuring the best sailors in the world, competing on foiling, wing sailed catamarans – an updated version of the AC45 raced in the last series. Red Arrows display on Friday 22nd July.

Thursday 21st July Salisbury – Museum of Army Aviation Event

HMS Conqueror: The Sinking of the Belgrano by Vice Admiral Sir Tim McClement.  Educated at Douai School and the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, McClement joined the Royal Navy in 1971.  He served as a submariner in the Falklands War and was second-in-command of the nuclear-powered hunter killer submarine HMS Conqueror and oversaw the attack on the Belgrano on 2 May 1982.  7:00 pm – 8:45 pm. Tickets £10. If you require additional refreshments, the Apache Cafe will be open for light refreshments until 7pm.
