Criminal Ornamentation: Yinka Shonibare Curates the Arts Council Collection
Criminal Ornamentation brings together over 80 works by a number of celebrated artists, selected and curated by Yinka Shonibare CBE.  Reflective of Shonibare’s own practice, this exhibition explores the cultural and social dimensions of the use of pattern in modern and contemporary art. The title of the show is taken from Adolf Loos’ 1908 influential essay ‘Ornament and Crime’. In this essay Loos’ examines the notions of good and bad taste and condemns the use of decoration and craft as an indication of the lowest level of cultural development, to the extent of stating “the modern man who tattoos himself is a criminal”.

Thursday 5th September – Middle Wallop
Museum of Army Flying Event

Forgotten Few – the story of the naval pilots in the Battle of Britain. For 20 years, the contribution of the Fleet Air Arm in the Battle of Britain went unrecognised by either the Admiralty or the Air Ministry. In 1960, the definition of ‘veteran of the Battle’ was widened to cover two naval squadrons in Scotland and although the naval pilots were mentioned in official records and memorials, their individual histories have seldom been recognised. Paul Beaver uses the research from his new book to tell the stories of some of the characters – the Royal Marine Ronnie Hay from Amesbury; Douglas Bader’s wingman, Dickie Cork and earlier operations in Norway. A curry supper is also available from the Apache Cafe at 6pm. Spaces are limited so book in advance to avoid disappointment. 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Book online https://www.armyflying.com/events/expert-talks/forgotten-few-the-story-of-the-naval-pilots-in-the-battle-of-britain/
