Sunday 23rd April Sopley (nr Bransgore) – Friends of the New Forest Airfields (FONFA) Classic Car day
This is a classic car event aimed at anyone who is interested in classic cars, aviation history or just history in general. You don’t have to have a classic car to enjoy this day. Located near Bransgore, the FONFA museum is dedicated to promoting the history that the New Forest’s airfields have played from 1918 to 1945 onwards. The event starts at 10am before a talk given at 10.45 by Dr Henry Goodall about the history of the New Forest’s aviation. After the talk, you can view the museum and the cars, which will be parked on site, whilst enjoying the light refreshments on offer. At noon we are off to one of the finest pubs in the New Forest, namely the ‘Three Tuns Inn’ where lunch will be available until about 2pm and then it’s off onto the New Forest roads! What will it cost? FONFA asks for a donation of £5 and for 10 –16 year olds it is £2. Wednesday 26th April Winchester – Science Centre & Planetarium Lecture Series
NASA Juno mission to Jupiter by Dr Emma Bunce (University of Leicester). The Juno mission to Jupiter is NASA’s latest endeavour to explore our outer solar system. Launched from Earth in 2011, Juno’s trip to Jupiter took about five years. Though the journey may seem long, this flight plan allowed the mission to use Earth’s gravity to speed the craft on its way. The spacecraft first looped around the inner solar system and then swung past Earth two years after launch to get a boost that propelled it onward to its destination. In July 2016, Juno successfully fired its main engine and was captured into orbit around the giant planet to begin its scientific mission. 4:30pm lecture £8/£6 and 6:30pm lecture £10/£8. Winchester Science Centre, Telegraph Way, Winchester, Hampshire, SO21 1HZ.
